Knowledge resides in documents and people. It is captured through interviews and databases. It is transferred through training and mentorship. Generative AI disrupts every link in this chain, not by improving existing processes but by introducing a fundamentally new category: artificial knowledge generation, where AI systems produce knowledge artifacts that are neither retrieved nor summarized but synthesized from latent patterns across the organization's data.
The KM World Transformed
Storey (2025), in ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems, examines how generative AI transforms the foundational knowledge management processes. The key insight is that GenAI does not fit neatly into existing KM categories. It is not a knowledge repository (it generates, not stores). It is not a search engine (it synthesizes, not retrieves). It is not a subject matter expert (it lacks experience and judgment). It is something new — a system that can produce knowledge-like artifacts at scale, forcing organizations to develop new frameworks for evaluating, validating, and integrating AI-generated knowledge into decision-making workflows.
The transformation affects all four pillars of knowledge management. Knowledge creation shifts from purely human processes to human-AI co-creation, raising questions about quality control and intellectual ownership. Knowledge storage must now accommodate AI-generated content alongside human-authored documents, with metadata indicating provenance and confidence. The AI amplifies existing knowledge infrastructure rather than replacing it. An organization with poor knowledge practices that adds GenAI gets more noise, not more signal.
Artificial Knowledge Generation

Their argument is that GenAI-produced knowledge is categorically different from human knowledge in ways that existing KM theory does not address: it has no experiential grounding, no intentionality, no awareness of context beyond training data, and no accountability for errors.
This does not make artificial knowledge valueless — it makes it a different kind of resource that requires different management practices. The authors propose extending KM frameworks to include provenance tracking (where did the AI-generated knowledge come from?), confidence estimation (how reliable is it?), validation protocols (how should it be verified before use?), and decay modeling (how quickly does AI-generated knowledge become outdated?).
The practical implication is that organizations adopting GenAI need not just new tools but new knowledge governance — policies and processes for managing a category of knowledge that did not exist five years ago. The organizations that figure this out will have a systematic advantage; those that treat GenAI as just another search engine will find themselves managing a knowledge base contaminated by confident, plausible, and occasionally wrong AI-generated content.
The Validation Challenge
The most pressing practical problem in artificial knowledge management is validation. When a human expert writes a report, the organization can evaluate it against the expert's track record, credentials, and reasoning. When an AI system generates the same report, the usual validation signals are absent. The output may be fluent, well-structured, and plausible, and also subtly wrong in ways that only a domain expert would detect.
The organizational response that early adopters are developing involves what might be called knowledge triage: classifying AI-generated knowledge by risk level and applying validation resources accordingly. Low-risk knowledge like meeting summaries and routine analysis can be used with minimal review. Medium-risk knowledge such as strategic recommendations and technical assessments requires expert review before use. High-risk knowledge including medical guidance, legal opinions, and financial projections should be treated as a starting point for human analysis, never as a final product.
This tiered approach reflects a pragmatic compromise: organizations cannot afford to validate every AI output with the same rigor, but they cannot afford to trust every output equally either. The challenge is establishing the classification criteria and ensuring that the triage process itself is systematically applied rather than left to individual judgment.
