Transhumanism at the Crossroads: Law, Morality, and the Posthuman Future
Transhumanism promises to enhance human capacities through AI, biotechnology, and cybernetics. But does enhancement improve human dignity or undermine it? Recent philosophical work examines the tension between humanist values and posthuman aspirations, with implications for law, education, and ethics.

Transhumanism—the intellectual movement advocating the use of technology to enhance human physical, cognitive, and psychological capacities—has moved from science fiction fringe to policy relevance. Brain-computer interfaces are in clinical trials. Genetic editing technologies can modify heritable traits. AI systems augment cognitive functions from medical diagnosis to legal reasoning. The philosophical question is no longer whether enhancement is possible but whether it is desirable—and if so, under what constraints.
The Research Landscape
Enhancement and Dignity
Akpan (2024) addresses the central philosophical tension: does technological enhancement increase human dignity (by expanding human capacities and reducing suffering) or undermine it (by treating the human body and mind as improvable objects rather than intrinsically valuable entities)?
His analysis distinguishes between therapeutic enhancement (restoring normal function—e.g., cochlear implants, prosthetic limbs) and augmentative enhancement (exceeding normal function—e.g., cognitive enhancement drugs, genetic modification for traits beyond the species-typical range). Most ethical frameworks accept therapeutic enhancement with relatively few reservations. The controversy concentrates on augmentative enhancement, where two philosophical traditions diverge:
